      • SYNOPSIS

        «Prisoners of Fate» follows refugees from Afghanistanand Iran in their daily lives in Switzerland. After the hardships of fleeing their home countries, the protagonists face the challenge of adapting to their new environment. Mahmad, a deserter, Sanam, separated from her young son, Ezat, worrying about his mother left behind, and the adolescent Omid, struggling with overwhelming homesickness, all feel powerless in the face of their destiny. Their everyday lives continue to be shaped by their traumatic experiences, but friendship, solidarity, and humor help them to never entirely lose hope.

      • MEHDI SAHEBI

        Mehdi Sahebi was born in Iran and came to Switzerland at the age of twenty. He studied ethnology with a focus on visual anthropology, history and international law at the University of Zurich and received his PhD with his award-winning documentary film "Time of Closure" (2006). The film won the SRG SSR prize at the 2006 Locarno Int. Film Festival (Semaine de la Critique) and the jury and audience awards at the Entrevue Film Festival Belfort. In 2016, his second feature documentary MIRR premiered at the Duisburger Filmwoche, where it won the support grant of the city of Duisburg as well as numerous other awards at international film festivals. His latest work PRISONERS OF FATE was nominated for the Swiss Film Award 2024 ("Best Documentary Film") and is the winner of the Zurich Film Prize 2024 ("Best Documentary"). Sahebi works as a director, cinematographer, editor and lecturer in documentary film.
